Acne can be brought on by many factors. So in this post I want to share with you what causes acne, and some lifestyle changes to get rid of acne that can be made easily.
Below are 10 lifestyle changes to get rid of acne you can make easily.
1. Get more exercise
Stress is one thing that can contribute to acne which can be greatly decreased by the amount of exercise you get. Also, when you are physically active it will increase blood circulation to the skin and carry more oxygen to skin cells carrying the cell waste away in the process. If you are not a member of the gym already, it may be time to join.
2. Drink more water
increasing your intake of water will help your body flush out all of the toxins and also help to keep you hydrated inside out. Although, there isn’t extensive research to back up that toxins in the body lead to breakouts of acne, there have been studies that found by consuming 2 cups of water boosted the blood flow significantly within the body and to the skin.
3. Make changes to your diet
Consumption of some foods can cause your blood sugar to spike too quickly which then triggers a boost of insulin. If there’s too much insulin in the bloodstream, it can trigger changes throughout your body which can lead to growths of cells that clog up the pores. Plus, it can also make oil glands more active which is another factor you can’t rule out when determining the cause of your acne.
It may be time to make some changes to your dietary intake. There is a study in the American Journal Of Nutrition which suggests that by adding more foods like whole grains, veggies and beans and cutting back on white rice, pasta, sugar and white bread may help reduce the amount of breakouts you have.
4. Get enough sleep.
There is a study on sleep which states: psychological stress could be increased by up to 14% per every hour of sleep that you lose over the night. But, what’s that got to do with acne? You may ask.
Some dermatologists suggest that the production of Glucocorticoids (which is a hormorne that is brought on by stress) can cause abnormalities within the skin making conditions such as acne worsen.
Some researchers have found that the temperature of the body being cooler can make it easier to help you get off to sleep. So, to the beauty sleep your body craves try rolling your thermostat back to a more comfortable temperature. There are also ways to fall asleep for insomnia sufferers. Sometimes you have to make some lifestyle changes to get rid of acne.
5. Cleanse two times daily.
Dermatologists will tell you that the face has more oil produced from the glands than any other parts of your body. So, with all the make-up, dirt, sweat, smog, dust applied to the face you’re left with excessively clogged pores. So, if that over accumulation is not washed away regularly it will fill the pores causing pimples and blackheads.
You don’t have to shower twice a day, but it would be a good idea to at least wash your face twice daily with a suitable cleanser, in the morning and in the evening before you settle for your nights rest.
6. Exfoliate a few times a week.
Yeah, it’s true over-active oil glands can be a cause of breakouts, but then so can under-producing oil glands cause you to get breakouts. The dried skin has little cracks in when it is too dry, making a breeding ground for bacteria to populate. Flaking skin can also cause the pores to become clogged too which is another common cause of breakouts.
The best way to prevent your pores from breeding bacteria or getting clogged is to make sure you keep your skin thoroughly cleaned by exfoliating a few times a week. Maybe every other day would be good as a skin care routine. Try using a exfoliating face brush with some suitable cleanser. Rinse off thoroughly and apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
7. Wear sunscreen in the summertime.
Since sitting in the sun you may have noticed your complexion seems much clearer and free from acne. This may make you hesitant to wear sunscreen in the future. However, it is just a matter of time as the inflammation from the sunburn can in fact worsen your acne. Furthermore, it can cause sun-damage causing dark spots.
I recommend wearing sunscreen whenever you go out into the sun. Be careful what sunscreen you choose though, some chemicals in sunscreen can irritate acne-prone sensitive skin. Look for a sunscreen that includes ingredients like: zinc oxide, octocylene, methoxycinnate, oxybenzone, and avobenzone. Also look for non-comedogenic on the sunscreen label; this means it shouldn’t clog up the pores in your skin.
8. Eat foods that contain Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
In some studies it has been shown that Omega-3 can help control the leukotriene (AKA: Vitamin B4) production. This is a molecule which increases the sebum and causes inflammed acne.
You can find Omega-3 in foods such as; Avocados, Walnuts, Salmon and Flax-seed Oil, Hemp Protein and many more. Sometimes you have to make lifestyle changes to get rid of acne. This can mean changing the foods that you eat.
9. Strategically style your hair.
Hair care products which include; conditioners, shampoos, gels and hairspray can cause you to get acne breakouts which is termed as “pomade acne” to dermatologists. This kind of acne happens when the oil from the styling products seep into the skin. Normally around where the hairline is. It then traps bacteria in the pores which causes acne as a result.
To prevent pomade acne, try changing your routine a little. Try washing your face after you wash or style your hair. That way you can wash away any residue that is left behind. Or alternatively choose hair products that are considered to be oil-free.
10. Keep your cell phone germ free.
There have been a number of studies conducted which have shown cellphones are breeding grounds for germs. As absurd as it may seem, whilst talking on your phone it is in-fact exposed to thousands of bacteria you may have picked up. Which then spreads from the fingers (from texting) to the face (from talking).
Not to mention the heat that’s produced by your cellphone which can help the bacteria to multiply.
To prevent germs from spreading to your face is simple. Just wipe some hand sanitizer over your phone each day. And using headphones to talk is another good idea.
Acne is a problem for many young and middle aged people these days. And because many things can contribute to acne, sometimes you have to make lifestyle changes to get rid of acne.
